Gender based violence in South Africa:

  • South Africa has one of the highest rates of violence against women in the world with around half a million cases being reported annually according to the SAPS crime reports
  • It is estimated that only 1 in 29 rape cases are reported according to the Medical Research Council (MRC)
  • 1 in every 4 women is in an abusive relationship – Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC)
  • Research by the Medical Research Council indicates that a woman is killed every 8 hours by her male intimate partner
  • Femicide (murder by a male intimate partner) has become the leading cause of all female homicides at 56% - Medical Research Council (MRC)
  • Research in urban Gauteng found that more than a quarter of women (27%) and nearly a third of men (31%) agreed that forcing someone you know to have sex with
    you is never seen as sexual violence -  Medical Research Council (MRC)
  • Over half the women of Gauteng (51.2%) have experienced some form of violence (emotional, economic, physical or sexual) in their lifetime - Medical Research Council (MRC)
  • 2% of women had been told they would have to have sex with a man in order to get a job – Medical Research Council (MRC)
  • Research in the Vhembe District indicates that 31.3% of intimate partners committing violence against women had a drinking problem - Human Sciences Research
    Council (HSRC)
  • In 2009/2010, nationally, 291,546 persons applied for a protection order in South Africa; more than half (58.2%) were granted a protection order and 21.2% withdrew
    the protection order. Over 78% of the protection orders were requested by women against men.(Gender Links, 2010)
